Example of a semantic map

Definition

A kind of graph that allows a visual access to organized sets of concepts (nodes) and relations (links), which constitute knowledge networks, systems and subsystems. This mode of representation can be a complementary access tool, useful both in the access, analysis and management of knowledge bases, as an alternative interface for accessing and browsing inside wiki tools, knowledge repositories, etc.

Description

Among the tools used in knowledge management (Knowledge Tools) a special importance is assumed by semantic maps.

This particular type of graph allows a visual access to organized sets of concepts (nodes) and relations (links), which constitute networks, systems and subsystems of knowledge. This mode of representation can be a complementary access tool, useful for access, analysis and management of knowledge bases, as an alternative interface for accessing and browsing wiki tools, knowledge repositories, etc.

Among the research activities promoted by the Project Pico - Knowledge Dynamics", within the EvTek - Evolutive Technologies Research Area, the development of methodologies and tools for the analysis, construction and access to conceptual networks is particularly important. In giving particular emphasis to the development of visual tools to facilitate knowledge management activities, a major research impulse is directed towards experimenting with new ways of using semantic maps. Among the simplest forms of semantic maps we find conceptual maps, in which concepts can only be linked by inclusion relations.

In this sense, a first version of the "evTek Semantic Web Builder" tool was recently released, destined to constitute the core of an integrated system for the realization of knowledge oriented websites, able to facilitate the construction of the knowledge base and allow an efficient access and use by users with little experience in the use of advanced IT tools. The tool incorporates a function intended for the analysis and governance of network of relations, which link the concepts that constitute the knowledge base, and a series of utilities for an easy management of the document archive that contains textual and visual resources.

A new version is being developed which, in addition to incorporating and improving the features already present in the current release, will present some important innovations: an adaptive system for optimizing the search engine results matrix (able to automatically analyze access and log of use of research results by users), a tool for the assisted creation of conceptual and semantic networks, with the generation of navigable maps, an advanced system of "semantic labeling" (semantic tagging) of documentary and visual archives.

To demonstrate in practice the usefulness of access knowledge bases through the use of visual maps, a first version of Semantic Maps Viewer was created, an application that can provide a partial idea of this developing methodology. This application allows access and web browsing to a two-dimensional semantic maps dedicated to the presentation of the Evolutionary Knowledge System. Besides a brief overview of the fundamental concepts, the provided maps contain the complete set of the conceptual schemes of the Process of Formation of Reality, a cardinal model of Evolutionary Physics and Metaphysics.
