Variation is the most fundamental Mode (mode of expression) / Component) of Action. It is the substrate of Existence in its most elementary form. Any variation is an Event, and any Event realizes a Variation of something. Variations—Events—are the "substance" Reality is made of. It is the Mode of Action relative to Reality in its most general aspects. The specifications relative to the two domains of Nature, the physical and the cognitive, are Perturbation and Meta Perturbation - Perception respectively. We can say that Variations do not exist, they happen. This is a Phenomenon, a product of the dynamics of the inner interaction of the two aspects of Sources.

It is associated with the Operator of Reality that has the same name and is the expression of the Fundamental Principle I call Principle of Variation (everything that exists is in incessant mutation, variation, or better, all that exists "is" incessant Variation). Variation, as an Operator of Reality, transmutes the pressure of Agents / Forces on Acted / Fields into an incessant Process of Variations, of fluctuations of the dynamics of / in those same Acted / Fields.

Variation is the way in which Acted / Fields react to the Action of Agents / Forces, the way in which Acted / Fields receive the expression of the Agents / Forces. It is the product of the expression of Causality. Variation is the root of the emergence of the Dimensionalities of Reality I call Spatiality and Temporality, the foundations of Space and Time.

The best question with respect to Variation undoubtedly is: what varies?

What varies is the distribution of Events and patterns of correlations among them. Any departure from a homogeneous distribution of Events, as well as any change in that distribution (and in their stochastic independence/correlation), represents a Variation. At any level of Complexity, from the most elementary to the Universe as a Whole, Reality can be described as a net of more or less independent/correlated stochastic processes. Metric (Space, Time), Mass, Motion, Charge, Spin and all the more complex Entities (Agents / Forces and Acted / Fields) and Phenomena (Events organized by Relations in Processes) observable in Nature are made of Events, of Action, which can be described as sets—or better, networks—of Relations (or correlations) among an infinite number of stochastic processes. Infinite are the ways in which the Relations among those stochastic processes organize and produce the infinite Complexity of the Universe in Evolution.

The Modes of Action are intimately connected with the Dimensionalities of Reality: Causality and Variationality, which produce the Dimensions of Reality: Cause, Space and Time. They represent three fundamental Operators in the Formation of Reality.

The Operator Variation can be seen as the result of the expression of Causality, the active side of Agency, while Propagation and Conservation can be seen as expressions of the two aspects of its passive side, Variationality: Spatiality and Temporality.

The Operator Variation is responsible for the formation of gradients in the Acted / Fields—inhomogeneities, anisotropies in the parameters that describe the Fields and their dynamics in the internal interaction with Agents / Forces as components of the Sources.
